Cropping and extending

Water-skier at Rother Valley

This image was taken as part of the exercise on representing movement by panning. Because of the slow shutter speed as well as the panning, there is a strong sense of movement in the image. The first crop is intended to remove some of the foreground water and background dark woodland which adds little to the image and results in the central figure being too small to have a significant impact. This provides an image where the much more horizontal format adds to the sense of movement across the water. The central position of the skier detracts from this slightly because there is as much emphasis on what is behind him as there is on where he is going. The second crop attempts to rectify this by giving much more emphasis to the space that the skier is moving into, therefore the image is more dynamic. The increased size of the figure adds to the impact.

Sunrise in the Adriatic

The first picture is pretty much the image as seen through the camera viewfinder. The expanse of unlit water in the foreground is dull and detracts from the image. The crop removes this, giving much more emphasis to the dawn sky, resulting in an image with much more impact.

Yellow Leaf

The first picture was taken as part of the exercise on placing a focal point at different positions within the frame. The shape of the leaf favours a central position. There radial symmetry of the composition is enhanced by cropping the image into a square format.
